What is generative engine optimisation?

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the discipline of building your business's content, entity signals and corroboration so large language models - ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot - can identify, trust and cite your brand when generating answers. GEO is distinct from traditional SEO: where SEO targets Google's ranking algorithm, GEO targets the training data, retrieval systems and trust signals that LLMs rely on when deciding who to recommend.

Why classic SEO rankings do not guarantee AI citations

A business can hold the number-one Google ranking and still be completely absent from ChatGPT's answers. LLMs do not read rankings - they pull from indexed content, entity corroboration, topical authority and the consistency of facts about your brand across the web. GEO builds those signals specifically.

Why the GEO opportunity is still open

Most businesses are not yet investing in GEO. The tools are new, the discipline is emerging, and most SEO agencies have added "AI" to their website without changing what they deliver. The businesses that build GEO foundations now will be the ones AI tools recommend in 12 months when the field is crowded.

What LLMs actually look for

LLMs cite content with high topical authority (many pages on a narrow topic), clear atomic facts, consistent entity signals (same name/address/description everywhere), structured data, and Bing indexation (ChatGPT and Perplexity both pull from Bing's index). GEO addresses all six.

GEO is a long-term competitive moat

A business deeply embedded in LLM training data and retrieval pipelines is very difficult to displace. Unlike a Google ranking that can shift with algorithm updates, a well-built GEO presence becomes self-reinforcing: citations lead to more citations.

What our GEO service delivers

A six-part programme that builds the content, structure and signals LLMs need to find, trust and cite your business.

Entity and brand signal audit

We check whether your brand, founder, services and credentials are consistent and corroborated across GBP, LinkedIn, Companies House, directories and on-site schema.

Topical authority architecture

We build a hub-and-spoke cluster covering every question your buyers ask AI tools about your service - so LLMs see you as the authoritative source on your topic.

GEO-formatted content

Answer-first writing with atomic facts, clear entity references, structured headings and the citation-friendly format that LLMs extract and attribute to named sources.

Schema and structured data

Organization, Person, Service, WebPage and FAQPage schema give LLMs machine-readable facts about your business - the structured signals that build entity trust fastest.

Corroboration stack

We publish and align the same facts about your business across every major signal source - GBP, LinkedIn, Bing, Clutch, sector directories - so LLMs see consistent, credible information from multiple independent sources.

AI citation monitoring

Monthly tracking of your mentions in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, with analysis of which queries you are winning, losing and should target next.

How GEO builds LLM citation

Six steps to becoming the business AI tools recommend by name.

Step 01

Entity audit

We check whether your brand exists as a consistent, corroborated entity that LLMs can recognise - and find every gap that is blocking citation.

Step 02

Topical authority map

We build the full cluster of questions your buyers ask AI tools and assign each to a page - so your site becomes the deepest source on your topic.

Step 03

Content and schema

We publish answer-first content with structured data across your cluster, giving LLMs atomic facts they can extract and attribute to your brand.

Step 04

Corroboration stack

We align your brand facts across GBP, LinkedIn, Bing, Clutch and directories - the multi-source corroboration LLMs need to trust a business.

Step 05

Monitor and compound

We track your AI citations monthly and identify where to add content, corroboration and schema to expand coverage and lock in your position.

GEO questions we are asked

What does generative engine optimisation mean?

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) means structuring your content and brand signals so the large language models that power AI search tools - ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini - can find, understand and cite your business when generating answers for users. It is different from SEO, which targets Google's ranking algorithm.

Is GEO the same as AI SEO?

GEO is one component of AI SEO. AI SEO is the umbrella term covering GEO (getting cited in AI-generated answers), AEO (appearing in AI Overview answer boxes), LLM SEO (ChatGPT and Perplexity citation specifically) and classic Google SEO. Our AI SEO service covers all four.

How long does GEO take to produce AI citations?

First citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity typically appear eight to sixteen weeks after the corroboration stack and GEO content are published and indexed. Google AI Overview citations can appear faster (two to six weeks) once AEO-formatted content is indexed. New domains take longer because LLMs apply higher trust thresholds to brands they have not seen mentioned across multiple sources.

Does my business need to be a well-known brand for GEO to work?

No. LLMs cite small businesses regularly - the determining factor is not brand size but whether the content is structured correctly, the entity signals are consistent and the topical authority is deep enough. Small, focused businesses with strong AEO and GEO foundations often outperform large brands with poor structure.
